Three Days In June by Anne Tyler

Gail Bains is not a people person. That’s what she’s told when she gets the news that she will NOT be the new headmistress of the Baltimore girls’ school where she has served as an assistant for many years. So she promptly quit her job.

But that’s not the worst thing to happen to her that day. Gail’s ex-husband arrives on her doorstep, asking to spend the weekend of their daughter’s wedding at her house. And Max has brought along an orphaned cat.

The “three days” in the title are the day before their daughter’s wedding, the day of the wedding and the day after.

Like all Anne Tyler novels, this is an enchanting novel with a subtle dose of humor. Not much happens, but the relationships between the exes and their daughter are complex and - dare I say it? - charming.

Is there a happy ending for the middle-aged, socially awkward Gail? You’ll have to read the book to find out. A friend of mine cried at the end. I didn’t.
