The Calamity Club, by Kathryn Stockett

I stumbled into this story because of my affection for Oxford, Mississippi and the literature it produces.

Set during the Great Depression, it opens in a dismal Mississippi orphanage before expanding into something sprawling, funny, heartbreaking, and completely alive.

The cast of characters is vibrant. At the center are two unforgettable narrators, Meg and Birdie, whose brief overlapping time together sets off a chain of events that manages to feel both intimate and epic in scope. The characters around them are so well drawn they feel deeply human in all their messiness as they navigate poverty, cruelty, and survival.

A nearly 700-page story about this much loss and dysfunction could easily drag or feel overwhelming. But Kathryn Stockett’s storytelling has real momentum. It is smart and the dialogue is sharp. The author pulls off a tone where the book is both bleak and warm at the same time, without ever tipping too far in either direction.

The Calamity Club is not subtle. Nor is it restrained. Some characters are larger than life, some edges are a little rough and a few moments push up against absurd. But it works because Stockett has rendered a world so fully realized it never pulls apart.

This is ultimately a story about resilience, connection and the strange ways people save each other.

I didn’t want it to end. Neither will you.
