Jul 4 Happy Independence Day!

This is a day for picnics, cookouts, fireworks and rereading the Declaration of Independence. It’s also a day to be thankful that the Founders didn’t sign that magnificent document in February.

The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon

Every once in a while you read a splendid novel and find yourself swept away, not only by the prose, but by the weather.

I stumbled upon this marvelous historical/mystery novel just as an Arctic blast hit our little corner of Southestern Virginia. Perfect timing because most of “The Frozen River” takes place during the bitterly cold winter of 1789 in Hallowell, Maine.

This is a fictionalized story of 18th century midwife and healer Martha Ballard, who kept a detailed journal during the years she delivered the babies of 1,000 women. Remarkably, she never lost a mother, although there were a number of still births.

Martha’s midnight rides on horseback to the sides of laboring women gave her an intimate peek at what went on behind closed doors in her village. When a dead body was chopped out of the the Kennebec River, the midwife was thrust into the center of a murder trial.

Lawhon claims that 75% of her novel is based in fact, while the rest is the result of her imagination. Beautifully written and compelling, this is the perfect novel to read in front of a crackling fire during cold snap.

Pour a cup of cocoa and immerse yourself in the tale.
