Musk v Trump
Break-ups are always ugly. And couples that air their grievances in public make a huge irreversible mistake.
Inevitably, both sides end up covered in mud.
The divorce - or temporary separation - between Donald Trump and Elon Musk was inevitable. The most powerful man in the world and the richest man in the world were swept up in a whirlwind bromance last year. It was beautiful while it lasted, but was guaranteed to hit a giant pothole.
For two men who live on social media, it was also inevitable that they’d slug it out digitally. Someone, take their phones!
It started earlier this week with a disgusted post on X by Musk about the One Big Beautiful Bill.
By Thursday afternoon the mud was flying with Musk insisting he was responsible for Trump winning the White House.
Trump countered that Musk was miffed about losing his electric vehicle subsidies.
Finally, Musk dropped the hammer, writing that the Epstein tapes aren’t being released because Trump is on them.
Seriously, Elon?
Given that the Democrats manufactured a “pee” tape and Russian collusion in an attempt to keep Trump out of the White House in 2016, is there any doubt that if there was evidence that Trump had been cavorting on Epstein Island it wouldn’t have been made public by Hillary’s slimy campaign?
No sooner had the Epstein post dropped than Democrats began demanding that the FBI release the Epstein tapes.
Hmmm. They’ve never done that before.
Could this just be a giant psy-op to gin up Democrat demand for tapes that will ultimately sink their party? Are Trump and Musk playing 3-D chess?
That’s probably wishful thinking. Two men, two giant egos. But the fact is, Americans voted for Trump, they didn’t vote for the slightly manic Musk.
I do believe Musk was responsible for Trump winning the White House. Not because he joined the Trump campaign or dumped a ton of money into its coffers.
Nope, Musk got Trump elected when he saved free speech and allowed the alternative media to tell the truth without fear of censorship on Twitter.
We are forever in his debt.
Now Musk is fuming. He wanted Congress to make huge spending cuts in the budget reconciliation bill and they didn’t do it.
Fact is, the Big Beautiful Bill that passed the House and is before the Senate does have spending cuts. It also increases spending on the border and to aid deportations with the hiring of 10,000 badly needed new ICE officers. It also makes permanent the Trump tax cuts.
For that reason alone it needs to pass the Senate.
Look, Musk is a genius. A visionary. He gave up a lot to head Trump’s DOGE team.
He took time away from his businesses to comb through government spending. His team ferreted out waste, fraud and abuse. In the process, he became public enemy number one to the left. Predictably, they called him a Nazi and began torching his Tesla dealerships.
It’s clear, however, that Musk doesn’t understand politics. Politics is the art of the possible. A bill that slashed government spending to the bone was never going to pass the House of Representatives with every Democrat guaranteed to vote against it and the Republican majority so slim that a handful of defectors would sink it.
It’s a cliche, but the perfect really is the enemy of the good.
The budget reconciliation bill is good. It needs to pass the Senate. Then Congress needs to get down to the business of recision.
Trump, who’s also a genius, differs from Musk in that he prides himself on mastering the art of the deal.
This deal was the best he could get given the slim majorities in both houses.
By the end of the day, Musk was sounding conciliatory on X, agreeing that he and Trump needed to bury the hatchet.
This was SIX days ago:
Trump and Musk have scheduled a phone call for later today.
Stay tuned. This isn’t over.
