Habemus Papam And More…

Habemus Papam And More…

Friday already? How to deal with the end-of-the-week tsunami of news?

Whaddya say we go for a hat trick? Three topics, one post.

Numero uno: Habemus papam!

Our first AMERICAN pope.

Did anyone see THAT coming? Common wisdom said there would not be a pope from these parts. If there was, I would have guessed it would be Timothy Dolan, the charming and erudite cardinal from New York.

Instead we got a rookie cardinal - elevated in 2023 - from Chicago, by way of Peru.

As a practicing Catholic I assume God sent him to us for a reason. We’ll find out what that is in time. My fist impression: He’s going to bring back unity to the flock.

As a cardinal, Pope Leo XIV was been a powerful voice against transgenderism and homosexual lifestyles and also against America’s immigration policies.

Something for everyone in that.

Caution: It’s way too early to know what sort of pope Leo XIV will be. He’s his own man, a kind and cerebral one, according to those who know him.

He’s described as a “centrist/moderate” by some, that alone would be a refreshing change from his predecessor. He’s also an Augustinian and not another Jesuit, thank God. Members of the order follow the teachings of St. Augustine and are far less obsessed with social justice than Francis’ order. Augustinians tend to be contemplative and more respectful of tradition than the renegade Jesuits.

The first American pope is just 69 and could have a long pontificate. I’m praying for him, hoping he holds tight to the faith and doesn’t cave to the moral relativism that at times seemed to be seeping into the church.

What makes Catholicism strong is not only that ours is the church founded by Jesus and steeped in beauty, but that we steadfastly believe in hard things. It’s easy to join a Sunday social club. Being a Catholic demands more.

Number two: Bernie Sanders is fighting the oligarchy by turning into Marie Antoinette.

Watch this exchange between the commie from Vermont and Fox’s Brett Baier:

Never change, Bernie. Go home to one of your three abodes and fight the oligarchy. What a joke.

Number three:

Joe and “Dr.” Jill went on “The View” yesterday, apparently hoping that by appearing with that panel of mid-wits the former president would look like sentient.

Here’s how that went:

What a sorry old man.

And, that will do it for the week!
