Sailing The British Virgin Islands

Sailing The British Virgin Islands

When we launched the website in 2017 I promised to take you with me whenever I traveled. So grab your flip flops, we’re on island time!

Earlier this month I spent six days on board Sun Goddess, a spectacular 53-foot charter catamaran in the British Virgin Islands. The yacht is owned by Captains Kevin and Cheryl Simmons. This sailing couple lived in Virginia Beach for 40 years before moving to paradise. They’re sponsors of The Kerry and Mike Show and invited me and my pal, Kathy, to sample the luxurious but laid-back lifestyle that comes with sailing on the Sun Goddess.

Here are some photos that don’t begin to capture the beauty of the tropical islands.

Our first glimpse of Tortola as we prepared to land on Beef Island.

My cabin! As a lifelong insomniac I found that the gentle rolling of the seas was the best sleeping aid ever!

Alex Haley wrote “Roots” and most of his other books while sailing on board cargo ships or freighters. He said the peacefulness of the water sparked his creativity. I’m no Alex Haley, but I did find this tropical setting preferable to writing at my desk!

Here we are on Virgin Gorda: Me, Kevin, Kathy and Cheryl.

The Baths at Virgin Gorda are spectacular. All but one of the islands are volcanic. Imagine the force of the volcanic explosions that caused these huge granite boulders to be tossed in the air.

Cheryl is not only a skilled sailor, but a gourmet cook. Can’t beat her breakfasts. Or lunches. Or dinners! Unbrellas make everything special.

Under sail…

Our captains on the fly bridge.

A squall blowing our way! Very exciting for about 15 minutes, then the sun popped out again.

Tipsy’s on Anegada.

Our fun-loving captains!

Lobster frittata anyone?

Sandy Spit, one of the smallest islands. Looks like a Corona ad to me!

Don’t forget to bring your college flag if you come to Foxy’s on Jost Van Dyke!

Uh-oh!

Taxis in the BVI tend to be pick up trucks with makeshift seats in the rear. Zipping up steep mountain roads in one of these is, um, exciting!

Passed this magnificent sailing ship in the Sir Francis Drake Channel.

Norman Island. Our last stop on this sailing trip. Want more information about Sun Goddess? Check it out at www.sungoddessadventures.com
