Spanberger Rushes To Get Criminals On Voting Rolls Before Mid-Terms

First the good news: Virginia managed to purge 6,531 non-citizens from the voter rolls over the past two years.

Now the bad: Over the weekend, Gov. Abigail Spanberger bragged that she slapped 66,085 rapists, child molesters and assorted other felons BACK on the rolls since she took office in January. (No breakdown on the crimes committed by the newest Democrats was offered, but it’s inconceivable that each restoration was carefully vetted.)

This is a net loss for Virginia.

Unless, of course, you believe that criminals who benefited from notoriously soft-on-crime, Soros-funded prosecutors such as Steve Descano in Fairfax, Parisa Dehghani-Tafti in Arlington County, Ramin Fatehi in Norfolk, and former prosecutor Buta Biberaj in Loudoun County ought to be voting for lawmakers.

Make it make sense.

Some on the left pretend to believe that when criminals are released from prison - whether or not they’ve paid court costs and reparations - they are eager to become upstanding, productive members of society.

There’s little evidence that this is the case.

That isn’t what they really believe, of course. They assume - correctly - that most criminals will vote Democrat, if they vote at all. They certainly aren’t going to cast their ballots for law-and-order candidates.

If lefties can’t keep non-citizens on the rolls, they want to pad the voter rolls with felons.

There is absolutely no incentive for these newly released criminals to vote for measures that will make the commonwealth a safer place to live. Just the opposite, in fact.

For years, Virginia restored the rights of felons - and please don’t call them “former” felons, there’s no such thing - on a case by case basis. For years, they had to actually ASK the governor for the restoration of their rights.

Lefties found this onerous. They pointed to blue states that not only allow freshly released convicts to head straight to the polls, but also allow inmates to vote.

In D.C., Vermont and Maine, a criminal never loses his or her voting rights. Rape an infant? Here’s your ballot! Shoot up a school? Thank goodness for mail-in voting. Torture the elderly in a nursing home? Democrats want your vote, too!

Virginia's current law permanently disenfranchises individuals convicted of a felony, leaving civil rights restoration - voting, serving on a jury, holding public office and becoming a notary public - entirely to the governor’s sole discretion.

Clearly, Spanberger has never met a criminal she doesn’t like.

Why not at least disqualify a felon from voting while on parole? Once that’s complete, let them vote.

Nah, too restrictive for Dems.

There is a referendum on this November’s ballot that would automatically restore civil rights to all criminals, no matter the depravity of their crime or their lack of remorse upon release from prison.

Vote no.
