Abigail Spanberger Has Declared War on the Second Amendment in Virginia

The Democrat governor is preparing to trample the gun rights of law-abiding Virginians, confirming exactly what critics warned all along.
Newly sworn-in Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger (D) is hellbent on turning Virginia into California, keeping her campaign promise to completely gut Virginians' constitutional right to bear arms.
Spanberger, a longtime supporter of the radical gun abolitionist group Everytown for Gun Safety, promised on the campaign trail to push through every gun law former Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin vetoed—and it's safe to say now she was not lying. Now, more than 10 bills are moving through the Virginia legislature targeting nearly every form of gun ownership—from how many bullets you can fire, to where you can carry, to what firearms you are allowed to own.
"I will sign legislation into law to make progress on these issues to keep Virginia families safe," she said while campaigning at an Everytown rally in 2025. "I will not veto common-sense proposals like our current governor has done."
Over the last four years, former Gov. Youngkin served as a shield for gun owners—vetoing 54 gun control bills sent to his desk by radical Democrats.
"I swore an oath to defend the Constitution of the United States of America and the Constitution of Virginia, and that absolutely includes protecting the right of law-abiding Virginians to keep and bear arms," Gov. Youngkin said.
But those days are over.
What Are Democrats Eyeing So Far?
Democrats are not pulling any punches when it comes to anti-Second Amendment legislation. Just days into Spanberger's term, "progressive" politicians have already filled the books with constitutional violations.
Senate Bill 749 would ban so-called "assault weapons" and limit magazine capacities to 10 rounds. The current version's exclusion of a "grandfather clause" would make owning "large capacity magazines" (read: regular magazines) a misdemeanor offense.
House Bill 217 seeks a ban on numerous everyday firearms, including many rifles, shotguns, and pistols. House Bill 207 would create a $500 tax on the retail sale of suppressors. This decision is a shameless cash grab that counteracts Trump administration actions to remove the tax on suppressors in the Big Beautiful Bill.
Senate Bill 27 and House Bill 21 create what Democrat lawmakers are calling "responsible conduct" standards for the firearm industry. The bills would impose state-mandated "controls" over the industry and allow the attorney general, local attorneys, and private individuals to sue manufacturers.
These bills are direct attacks on the Second Amendment and open the door for anti-gun groups to sue manufacturers out of business.
Senate Bill 38 and House Bill 93 would expand Virginia's current prohibited person restrictions to include anyone who lives in the same household as a prohibited individual. This change would allow the state to strip a law-abiding individual of the right to carry simply because a family member or roommate was deemed "prohibited."
Moving Forward
Without former Gov. Youngkin acting as a last line of defense for gun owners, Democrats are now able to declare open season on the Second Amendment.
If Spanberger succeeds in pushing through the numerous anti-gun owner bills currently moving through the legislature, gun ownership in Virginia will begin to mirror blue states like California and Oregon. The only hope left for law-abiding Virginians is Supreme Court precedent set by Bruen and Heller.
These landmark decisions affirm that it is every American's right to carry a firearm. The Bruen decision further requires any form of gun control to be rooted in the nation's historical tradition of firearm regulation.
If these bills make it through the legislature and are signed by Spanberger, it will be up to the courts to do their duty and interpret the Constitution in line with Supreme Court precedent.
