Tim Kaine Needs A Copy Of The Declaration Of Independence

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. From the Declaration of Independence.

Ladies and gentlemen, l present Tim Kaine, U.S. Senator from Virginia. At the Senate confirmation hearing for Riley Barnes to be Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor, he belched out the following.

This was in reaction to Barnes’ statement, “We are a nation founded on a powerful principle, and that powerful principle is that all men are created equal, because our rights come from God our Creator — not from our laws, not from our governments.”

Kaine found Barnes’ view of civil rights, “troubling.”

I find Kaine troubling.,

Believe it or not, Kaine is a Harvard Law School grad. It’s tempting to say that Harvard teaches its law students the perverse concept that the American government grants citizens their rights, but Ted Cruz, Senator from Texas is also a Harvard grad and he has a solid grasp on the foundational principles of our great republic. 

Shoot, I went to a third-rate college and was an English major for my first two years.  Even I know that our rights are God-given. (OK, “natural rights” for you heathens.)

And the purpose of the U.S. Constitution? To protect our rights and restrain government from infringing on them.

This is Social Studies 101.  

Memo to Tim Kaine: If government gives citizens their rights, government can also take them away. I know that concept is intoxicating to some - as it was during covid - but it’s repugnant to educated Americans.

Oh, wait. You know who else went to Harvard? For his undergraduate degree, anyway?

Yep, John F. Kennedy. Even though he graduated from NYU school of law, he also grasped the principles upon which our nation was created.

Tim Kaine? Not so much.

Apparently, Kaine doesn’t know the difference between a theocracy and a constitutional republic. Worse, he seems entirely unfamiliar with the Declaration of Independence, which was penned by a rather famous Virginian, Thomas Jefferson.

Frankly, Kaine’s foundational ignorance is disqualifying. He should resign.

You know what’s worse? When you remember that this rumpled Senator who wears his glasses on his forehead is Virginia’s smart senator.

Virginians deserve better.
