Hollywood Hypocrites And The Emmys

Hollywood Hypocrites And The Emmys

Oh look. A new, exciting woke way to refer to racial minorities:

“Global majority”

Yep. I learned this clever phrase from “The Hollywood Reporter,” where I turned Sunday night to learn the winners of this year’s Emmy awards.

You didn’t think I was going to actually WATCH an awards show, did you? I long ago gave up wasting prime -time hours on these self-congratulatory orgies loaded with Hollywood hypocrites who lecture and ridicule the little people who watch their movies and television shows.

The Hollywood Reporter’s hot take on this year’s awards? So predictable. This:

“#EmmysSoWhite: White Actors Sweep the 2021 Emmy Awards”

Although performers from the global majority comprised 44 percent of acting nominees they were shut out at the 73rd Primetime Emmys.

Sigh.

You don’’t suppose there’s a chance that this year the best performances in the major categories were turned in by - gasp - white actors?

Even the awards show host, Cedric the Entertainer, joked about the pressure to chose winners based solely on skin color:

“It comes with a lot of pressure, being Black, hosting a job like this…” Cedric the Entertainer joked near the top of the show. “My people, they expect that I can just give an award to anybody. Black people like, ‘Yo Ced, come on man, you gotta give Martin Lawrence an Emmy. And not just Martin, Ced, you gotta give Sheneneh one too.’

“Jimmy Kimmel don’t have that problem. He don’t have to give no award to Tony Danza,” the comedian continued.

Is it possible that there’s a non-racist explanation for this year’s all-white winners? Could it be that in the second year of a global pandemic Americans are simply longing for escapism and shows like “Ted Lasso” with its relentless optimism and “The Crown,” a soap opera about the royals are delivering exactly what the viewers want? Is it possible that the actors in these shows are superb?

It appears this trade publication - dedicated to the entertainment industry - would prefer that awards be given for skin color and gender rather than actual performances. If you read this insipid article it laments that Emmy missed a chance to bestow awards on the first transgendered actor, the first non-binary performer and the first Afro-Latina actress.

How was this allowed to happen? How did the voters neglect to tick those all-important boxes?

Frankly, if there was racism at work here, Hollywood only has itself to blame.

Emmys are voted on by the roughly 25,000 members of the Television Academy, professionals who work in the world of TV entertainment. They range from actors to writers to producers. Once a year they are divided into peer groups and asked to vote in their particular category.

Apparently, in 2021 they cast ballots for the actors that turned in the best performances.

That, it seems, was an award-winning mistake.
